Crush Your Goals This Year
Happy New Year! Are you excited?! Full of energy at the opportunity to set new goals and become the next best version of yourself?
Too often resolutions made on January 1st fall fizzle out by February 2nd. Don’t let that be you. Instead, become part of the 1% that actually keep their resolutions all year, or better yet, the 6% that stick with it beyond a year, according to this Forbes article. We’ve even got a free 5 day goal setting challenge to help, but first let’s talk about why most resolutions fail and how you can increase your chance at succeeding with your goals.
Why Resolutions Fail
Most resolutions fail due to lack of structure, accountability, or a clear plan. Some fail due to unrealistic goals, the wrong mindset, or people forgetting about their goals all together. Don’t let that be you.
SMART Goals
Let’s start by setting SMART goals. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound. Let’s work through these.
Specific - You’ll have a better chance at succeeding at your goals if you make them specific. Rather than setting a goal to exercise more, try setting a goal to exercise at least 3 times per week or for 150 minutes each week. Laying out the specifics in terms of how many days each week or minutes each week you want to exercise allows you to start to make a plan as to how exercise will fit into your weekly schedule. You can begin to see days and openings in your week where you might have (or not have) the time to go for a walk, take a trip to the gym, or follow along a quick YouTube workout and plan accordingly.
Measurable - Tracking your progress allows you to hold yourself accountable. It also allows you to get motivated by quantifying the progress you are making and thus, encourages consistency.
As you see yourself being consistent, it’s easier to gain momentum. Another benefit of tracking your progress is that it allows you to celebrate the small wins along the way. At the end of the year, being 75%, 50%, or even 10% closer to accomplishing your goals is something worth noting. Progress is progress, no matter how small, so don’t forget to celebrate the small wins along the way.
Attainable - One of the main reasons people don’t reach their goals is because the goal was unrealistic to start with. Yes, your goals should be challenging and maybe even out right hard. After all, if it’s a goal, it’s probably something you haven’t done before. The fact that you will be entering uncharted territory for you, will bring some challenges. However, your goals have to actually be achievable. If you’ve never been a runner or exerciser before, setting a goal to run a marathon at the end of the month is not an attainable goal. Setting a goal to be able to run a 5K is more realistic.
Choosing attainable goals also requires making a plan as to how you will show up to accomplish the goal. Define steps you can take each week to get closer to your goal.
Relevant - Making sure your goal is relevant to who you want to become or the overall big goal or mission you want to accomplish allows you to tap into your emotional side a bit.
What’s your why for wanting to accomplish said goal? Your why should be deeper than just wanting to fit into an old pair of jeans or reach a certain money goal. What will accomplishing this goal do for you, your health, confidence, financial stability, relationships, or family’s well being? How will working towards this goal set the stage for the type of person you want to become or the bigger goal you want to accomplish? Tapping into the feelings associated with your why will make you more likely to stick to your action plan on the days when motivation is lacking.
Time bound - Give yourself a deadline to start or accomplish your goals. Break up larger goals into smaller ones. If you have a lot of goals, consider only working on 3 or 4 of them at a time each month or quarter. This will prevent overwhelm and make it easier to remain consistent.
That’s how to create SMART goals. Don’t overthink it.
Pro Tip: You can write your SMART goals down in your go to journal or notebook or use a printable or digital worksheet.

Increase Your Chance of Success
There are a few more things you can do to increase your chance of success with your New Year resolutions.
First, write your goals down. You’ve got to get them out of your head. Put them on paper and make them real. Consider asking a trusted friend or someone a few steps ahead of you in the process to hold you accountable.
As mentioned above, break your bigger goals down into smaller ones and create an action plan.
Lastly, get intimate with your goals. Review them regularly. Track them. Create a vision board or make the background on your computer or phone. Do whatever you need to do to keep them top of mind so that you can’t help but work towards them.
Imagine finishing the year feeling like you’ve accomplished everything you wanted…
